PACIFIC RIM JAEGAR FEATURETTE (Video) – Ever wonder how these massive robots in Pacific Rim made it onto the big screen? Thanks to director Guillermo Del Toro, now we get to see the inner workings of a Jaegar, the machine operated by two human pilots. In order to convey a sense of realness, Del Toro decided to build the head of the robot to limit the amount of green screen and special effects used in the film. The entire set for the head was about four stories high and it was able to move around to create the robot’s walking effect. The actors were also attached to weighted machinery to mimic the resisted movements of the pilots. Check out what Del Toro calls his “little amusement park simulator.” Pacific Rim stars Charles Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman.

PLOT: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
